A couple of Aussie Finches
Honestly, I personally have found Finch's are the most complicated to investigate. There is nothing simple about them at all. There appears to be 15 species of Finch's in Australia. You can also do your own search or you can click on the Red-Browed Finch. They are a beautiful little bird and fairly tame for having their photos taken. They are 11-11.5cm in size. Similar species is the Red-eared Firetails they hang around in fairs and families and darts to cover in bouncing flight. Their voice is a high pitched squeak, sharp 'dup'; brisk chatter Their habit includes grassy clearings in...
Bees Are Amazing
Spring of 2022 right up til Christmas Day was so much cooler than normal, so our natives were not flowering as normal, so bird life was quieter and we didn't see the bee activity as normal. Now they start to appear but temperatures are fluctuating at the moment a cold day or 2 then a boiling hot day will come along, but our wildlife adapts. I was reading an article recently in "THE LITTLE BOOK OF BEES" by Hilary Kearney and illustrated by Amy Holliday. I thought I would start this post sharing a little article with you. ...
Cork Back Place Mats and Coasters
Available from our shop are these beautiful cork backed place mats (6 to the box) and coasters (6 to the box). They are available as a set or individually. Postage Australia wide is free. We will not be doing another print run of these, but are looking at other sets to do down the track.
Red Browed Finch
The bright scarlet bill, eyebrow and rump makes it easy to identify this little bird which is found only down the east coast of Australia and into coastal South Australia. The Juveniles bill is black and it lacks the eyebrow but has a scarlet rump like the adults. They are only 11-11.5cm in size. Similar species is the beautiful Red-eared Firetails which I haven't photographed yet as they are only in a small area in southern Western Australia. Their habitat is grassy clearings in forests, woodlands, coastal scrubs and heaths, mangroves, cane-fields, crops, roadsides, blackberries, lantana, golf courses, orchards, parks...
Good Things Come In Small Packages
With my dislike for winter and the cold weather I tend to hibernate a bit, coming out only for necessities. This gives me an opportunity to go back through my photos for the year and to reflect on my many road trips. Some of these road trips are just for the day, others are overnight stays taking me to New South Wales and a lot of Queensland but still have so many more places to go. I have posted images of the Male Scarlet Honey eater which was one of the biggest highlights on my 2019 photography year, so much...
