A couple of Aussie Finches
Honestly, I personally have found Finch's are the most complicated to investigate. There is nothing simple about them at all. There appears to be 15 species of Finch's in Australia. You can also do your own search or you can click on the Red-Browed Finch. They are a beautiful little bird and fairly tame for having their photos taken. They are 11-11.5cm in size. Similar species is the Red-eared Firetails they hang around in fairs and families and darts to cover in bouncing flight. Their voice is a high pitched squeak, sharp 'dup'; brisk chatter Their habit includes grassy clearings in...
Double-Barred Finch
Another little Aussie gem is the Double-Barred Finch which is a tiny 10-11cm in size. It is also known as the Banded or Black-ringed Finch. It has 2 distintive thin black bars across its lower white throat and chest, the rump is also white and the tail is black. It is seed foraging in pairs or flocks. Similar species are Banded Whiteface, and White-fronted Chat. I have only spotted this little charfmer a couple of time, first time was onnour road trip to Dubbo in September 2019 where I captured him (see Featured Photo) and at Petrie near the river...
Red Browed Finch
The bright scarlet bill, eyebrow and rump makes it easy to identify this little bird which is found only down the east coast of Australia and into coastal South Australia. The Juveniles bill is black and it lacks the eyebrow but has a scarlet rump like the adults. They are only 11-11.5cm in size. Similar species is the beautiful Red-eared Firetails which I haven't photographed yet as they are only in a small area in southern Western Australia. Their habitat is grassy clearings in forests, woodlands, coastal scrubs and heaths, mangroves, cane-fields, crops, roadsides, blackberries, lantana, golf courses, orchards, parks...
Striated Pardalote
I have tried for a couple of years to capture this little one. The Striated Pardalote is only 9.5-11.5cm in size. No wonder it has taken me so long to find. Their colors are absolutely beautiful in both the very early morning and day light. Their other names are Pickwick, Wittachew and Chip-chip. I really enjoyed taking these photos using natural light early in the morning right on the bank of a river, this little one perched on a limb overhanging the river slightly and he had early morning sun rays highlighting his beautiful features They breed from June -Feb...
The Scarlet Honeyeater
The highlight of my photography year in 2019 was definitely spotting and capturing the Scarlet Honeyeater's in action everyday for about 4 months feeding from the various native flora that we planted many years ago on our 2 acre property. Scarlet Honeyeater is only about 10cm in size they are very very quick making them extremely difficult to see and capture on camera. I witnessed the hard working female who went about building her nest, lovingly looking after and feeding her chicks sometimes 2 or 3 at a time which was an all day effort due to being chased...
