Breeding Ospreys
I spent a few hours watching this young female and male Osprey yesterday building their relationship with each other and building their nest together.
They were building their nest on a man made tower especially built for them to nest. They are mostly located on or near our coastal rivers, inlets, coastlines and islands.
Their breeding season in northern Australia is April-July and Southern parts of Australia July-Sept
Both the female and the male frequently left the nest during that 2 hours of watching them. Sometimes they came back with sticks, sometimes they came back with a fish. There was a lot of discussions going on amongst them as to which stick stays and which ones don't. Obviously this one below was too hard or not quiet right for the job so it had to go
They didn't have to flap their wings much they just waited for the wind to be right and it just seemed to pick them up and away so beautifully
Once they were airbourne, they simple twisted a few feathers this way and that to turn around or to go down and up. Their wing flapping appeared to be used more for speed.
They look so beautiful when in flight with a lovely blue sky behind them.
All of a sudden it became very overcast almost at the point of raining when they gave me an amazing flyover unfortunately with clouds only behind them and not the lovely blue sky, but it was a flyover that I will never forget
I wasn't expecting this
I love the way they cross their legs when in flight. Just when I was packing up to come home one of them returned with a meal
I will certainly be back for some more photos as they continue preparing their nest
